Exploring & Touring
Abseiling, gold-panning and exploring
The ruggedness of the area means there are many challenging locations for abseiling and exploring. Gold and gems may still be found in some of our streams, so try your luck at panning. You’ll need a Miners Right which is available at the Visitor Information Centre.

Lake Sambell
Beechworth’s pretty ‘man-made’ lake and popular recreational family spot offers barbeque and playground facilities, fishing, swimming and a Bocchi court. This impressive re-development is on a major gold mine site where hydraulic sluicing severely impacted on the environment and landscape. This area has been attractively rejuvenated into a beautiful lake in the heart of Beechworth. The Chinese Gardens, guarded by a pair of Chinese Lions at the entrance to Rocky Mountain Tunnel (not open to the Public) add interest to this area.
